I Need Help With Nutrition Label Facts?
I went shopping today, and I always, ALWAYS look at the nutrition label before buying something. It’s like second nature to me. But, sometimes there are things I don’t understand. Can someone help?
Things I don’t understand-
1. When buying juice or any other drink, the label says ‘Made From Concentrate’. I know this means it’s not real juice, but then what’s in it? And why does it say on the front 100% juice when it’s not?
2. What does it mean when it says ‘Natural and Artificial Flavors Added’?
3. Which has less salt or sugar, ‘No Salt/Sugar’ or ‘No Salt/Sugar Added’? Why?
4. Why is Extra Virgin Olive Oil better than regular olive oil? What extra benefits does it have?

‘Made From Concentrate’ means that the juice add WATER into it. Adding few water helps the juice tastes less “sour” which is usually a good thing, balancing both taste and “sour” flavor (too much water will taste less fruity). Water is like a “neutral” substance, and since every drink has to have water in it, those extra water people put in don’t really count and so it should be 100% juice. I heard few people saying some juice isn’t really 100%, but I’m not sure about that…

2. What does it mean when it says ‘Natural and Artificial Flavors Added’?
Natural and Artificial Flavors… Natural flavor is any flavor that is from nature, like the flavor of hand-picked apples. Artificial flavor is any flavor that is copied. Of course, most candies don’t really come from real fruit, so scientists copy the taste and add it to the candy. If it’s both natural AND artificial flavors added, it probibly means the food has mixed of both natural and artifical flavors.

3. Which has less salt or sugar, ‘No Salt/Sugar’ or ‘No Salt/Sugar Added’? Why?
I have to say No Sugar (and salt, but when I meant sugar, I also meant salt). No sugar means the food has NO SUGAR AT ALL. No sugar ADDED means the people didn’t add any sugar, BUT there may ALREADY has some [natural] sugar on the food. For instance, obviously pure, fresh water has no sugar at all, so it’s best for it to be labeled ‘No Sugar’ (seriously, who would?). But for fruit juice, if people don’t add sugar in the juice, it’s more appropriate to be labeled ‘No Sugar Added’ because fruits already have NATURAL sugar (glucose in other word). If you don’t know this already, go re-do your science homework.

4. Why is Extra Virgin Olive Oil better than regular olive oil? What extra benefits does it have?
Extra Virgin (or at least virgin) is definitely better than regular because it has better nutrition than regular. One nutrition in virgin that is better than regular is that “good” cholesteral (not that bad, fatty one). This kind of cholesteral helps protect your blood. Other reasons include that virgin is lighter in weight and is less likely to burn than regular one. Of course, virgin olive oil comes at a higher price to get those extra benefits.
