Important Tips on How to Treat Your Baby’s Fever

I have a 6 month old baby, she had a fever a few days ago and had it for over a week. I was very confused about what to do, so I took her to see a doctor, but there was no improvement for her condition. I think, I am not alone in this situation, there are many parents also face this problem and do not know what to do. In this article I want to share my experience on how I overcome this problem and important tips on how to treat your baby’s fever.

The trouble began at 5th February 2009, here were the conditions of my baby:

  • 5th February, she had nasal decongestant with excess fluid or mucous that runs out her nose. Doctor’s prescription: cotrimoxazole (antibiotic) and anti allergic drugs. Result: improvement with her nose condition.
  • 9th February, she got a cough. Doctor’s prescription: amoxicillin (antibiotic) + expectorant and anti allergic drugs. Result: no improvement
  • 11th February, she started to have a fever, her body’s temperature began to rise. Doctor’s prescription: cefadroxil suspension (antibiotic), methylprednisolone, betamethasone, and dexchlorphenamine maleate. Result: no improvement
  • 13th February, her body temperature began to drop to normal, but a macular rash appears on her skin, the doctor said it cause by virus (Exanthema Subitum). Doctor’s prescription: stop all the antibiotic and corticosteroids, treat according to the symptoms

Now, my beloved baby is back to normal and healthy, but from the experience I got, I have learned that we should not panic and make inconsiderable decision with our baby’s health. If your baby has a fever, you do not always have to give antibiotic as a problem solver. Sometimes your baby is suffered from virus infection and antibiotic has no use against it. As a matter of fact I am very disappointed with the doctor, he should have put an accurate diagnose in the beginning before he wrote the prescription for my baby. In this case she was suffered from virus infection, and there is no antibiotic can cure her. Only time and her body immune system can put her health back (she returned to normal and healthy at 3 to 4 days later). I only gave her paracetamol for her fever and some food supplement to boost her immune system.
