Is There Any Benefit In Taking Vitamins While Pregnant?
I eat a healthy diet, hardly any processed foods, lots of carbs protein and fruit and veg, but should I take a pregnancy multivitamin supplement anyway? Would it help and if so, in what way?

You might consider taking some minerals but you seem to be getting the right food into yourself. The benefit of taking vitamins would be only if you were lacking in something but it sounds like you properly are not. so keep up the good work that you started so that the two of you will be extremely healthy. If you feel healthy and are full of vitality then you are doing real good be proud of yourself.

It is very beneficial. Everything you eat/ingest goes to your baby. Leaving your body less to absorb. Taking vitamin supplements provides that extra amount so you and the baby can use what you need.

Your Dr or health care professional should be consulted. They generally make sure to tell you all that stuff. If you are not seeing a Dr, a multivitamin can’t hurt, and will undoubtedly help.

it is hard to get all of the nutrients you AND your baby needs with diet alone. If you baby lacks in certain nutrients it can cause birth defects.

I’ve heard that you should take an omega-3 supplement with pregnancy, since you need that good fat for the baby’s development.

You should take folic acid 1 mg per day in the first trimester and then ferrous tablets to the term, I mean end of the pregnancy. Even if you have healthy and enough food to eat, it is recommended to follow the above-mentioned medicine to fulfill your and your baby’s essential needs.

There’s a whole lot of benefit to taking vitamins. Actually, medical opinion states that prenatal vitamins should actually be started BEFORE a woman gets pregnant. There’s a special vitamin, Folic acid, that is a MUST, absolutely necessary for the 1st part of pregnancy. It’s because of a lack of this vitamin that many women give birth to babies with spinal cord defects….these babies usually dont last long. Another requirement for pregnancy is iron. Your baby will be making RBCs which require increased iron intake. The best way to get the appropriate doses of everything is to take prenatal vitamins.

I have been prescribed folic acid and iron combined in one pill by my GP and was told that it was not neccassary to take anything other than this.

Make sure you get one with extra folic acid. It is better to take a multivitamin as you are going through more now. Even if you eat healthy it can be difficult to get all of the needed vitamins.
